This is a really cool article in the Toronto Star about research being done to examine falls in winter, on stairs, and in an urban community. The labs replicate the conditions and work with companies to improve products such as wheelchairs and winter boots, and research the impact of falls on the body. This stuff gets me so excited. Falls cost billions of health care dollars and early death in seniors. Having a strong, healthy body can prevent falls, and make recovery much easier if a fall occurs. I fell twice last year, and it affected my life, even as a very healthy and young individual. My own injuries inspired me to focus on injury prevention and rehabilition, and I am really passionate about the topic. I would be heartbroken if one of my loved ones fell and was bedridden and left to feel helpless. We really need to focus on stregthening the body and improving balance and coordination, especially because aging results in inevitable deterioration. Exercise, healthy diet, and good mental health are all some of the components of slowing down aging, and preventing potentially disasterous injury.
