Check out this link about meat consumption in North America, by Mark Bittman
It is refreshing to see an article that address consumers making positive food choices. I feel like I read a lot of doom and gloom in regards to the food industry and consumers habits. As a population we are becoming much more educated about food and where it comes from, and we are starting to cut back on our consumption of animal products. Having worked at one of Torontos best butchers, check them out here, I have an appreciation for meat, and will never stop eating it. However, as consumer I believe we have responsibility to make choices that will benefit the planet. High consumption of meat, especially meat from factory farms, is detrimental to the environment and our health. I don't want to get into details about animal cruelty or the carbon footprint and poor wages paid to laborers, but watching Food Inc would be a good place to start if you are unfamiliar with these practices.
See if you can make some days a week meatless. Legumes are a great way to get protein, fiber, and minerals in your diet, and they are versatile, non perishable, and inexpensive.
