Many women speak to me about their dissatisfaction with their body, and specific body parts. Being in fitness competitions myself, I have had to work to shape my body to meet a specific standard, and am guilty at times of comparing myself to other women and their physiques. We are bombarded by images in the media of perfect, air brushed women who's body types are representative of less than 2% of the populations body type. We are shown this unrealistic standard and may forget that this is not the norm. Celebrity's have personal stylists, hair and make up, and often personal chefs, trainers, and trips to the spa. Thankfully, stick thin seems to be going out, and fit is coming into style. However, that can also be an issue. A six pack and teeny thighs that don't touch is unrealistic for most. Hopefully, most women get the exercise bug and will keep it up based on how they feel and the health benefits, not purely for vanity.
A little bit of body dissatisfaction can be a motivator. Being overweight or obese can motivate one to work out and lose weight in a healthy matter. Seeing changes in your body and being healthy can make one feel sexier and more confident. Becoming obsessive about the gym and your weight can be detrimental to your health and well being. It is all about balance. Staying away from the scale is highly recommended. Weighing every other week can be a way to keep track of your progress and keep you motivated, but more than may just mess with your mind. I don't own a scale, and go by how my clothes fit. Measuring your self worth by a number is not recommended.
I realized this year that I will never be a top fitness competitor. My legs are quite short and calves low on my body. But that is ok. I love my legs and bum, and even though my thighs touch, I really embrace their thickness. I love how they can power me through jump squats, and how I can wear short shorts (I had huge body image issues growing up, and refused to wear shorts until I started exercising seriously). Lets embrace what we love about our bodies, and focus less on what we dislike.
There are so many products designed to make ourselves better looking: hair extensions, lash extensions, tanning, injectables, high lights, low lights, tattoo eyeliner, fake nails, fake teeth, slimming pants, slimming shoes, etc. It can be overwhelming. The thing I like to remember is that no one will remember you for what you look like, but the ways that you helped others and the positive things that you do in your life. The most beautiful people look great because they are active and fit, and glow from the inside. They radiate an inner peace and healthiness.

  1. Wow, cool post. I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real hard work to make a great article... but I put things off too much and never seem to get started. Thanks though. beginner fitness equpiment
